- "Gardens that reflect a combination of
nature, art and literature are a rare and wonderful addition to a
community. Children form the essence of our community, and to
dedicate a space for a Children’s Literary Garden
reflects Brighton Memorial Library’s commitment to this
fundamental concept.
-
- The planning of the Carol Heininger Wahl
Memorial Children’s Literary Garden evolved around the central
theme of children, literature and nature. The use of a variety of
design elements provides visual continuity among individual
pockets of spaces to create a balanced picture.
-
- The free-form stamped concrete walkway
forms the core of the design. The main entrance is emphasized by
the freestanding timber structures, and a walk through them lends
perspective and draws the eye into the space beyond. Undulating berms provide enclosure and lead to the grassy steps of an
amphitheatre nestled between the trunks of two trees for naturally
canopied outdoor storytimes.
-
- The trees, shrubs and flowers are native
species that are easy to identify in a dynamic seasonal landscape.
Color, texture, smell and form play an important part in the array
of flora. Benches will offer a resting place for young explorers and
book lovers of all ages. Literary quotations relate to the
plantings and serve as way-finders to the garden exploratorium.
