Especially for Seniors
Programs and Classes

Adult Programming
Adult services programming includes book reviews and travelogues throughout the year. Mid-day scheduling of these programs assists seniors who prefer to drive during daylight hours. While open to everyone, these programs are very popular with seniors.

Media Programming
Musical and film programs, offered in the afternoons and early evenings, appeal especially to our senior population. Eastman School of Music performances, opera lectures, and comedy and classic film series have drawn enthusiastic audiences.

Computer Training
A variety of computer classes are offered to the community all year. Due to strong interest from seniors, classes in personal finance, genealogy and medical resources are scheduled during the day.

Books, Magazines, CDs and Videos

New Materials and Large Print
Located just steps from the front door, the Reading Room contains a wide array of popular new magazines and books, including the latest large print fiction and non-fiction best sellers. New items are added to this collection regularly and suggestions from
seniors for new titles are appreciated. The Library has an extensive collection of older large print books and back issues of Reader’s Digest magazine. Current issues of Reader’s Digest are available in the Reading Room.

Media Collection
Audio books expand access for many seniors in the community. This collection is heavily used and enjoyed by lifelong learners including commuters, travelers and visually impaired patrons.

Many videos in the media collection are closed captioned for the hearing impaired and DVDs often come with optional
subtitles for the same purpose.

Librarians provide referrals to the New York State Talking Book and Braille Library program for Brighton residents who are physically or visually impaired.

Reference and Internet Access

Seniors often take advantage of the financial information offered at the Library. Sources like the Value Line Investment Survey database, Morningstar Mutual Funds Report and Standard and Poors reports are heavily used by retirees to keep a close watch on investments.

Free Internet access enables seniors to exchange e-mail with friends and family members, view online photos of children and grandchildren, plan vacations and research topics from travel to medical issues.

Senior Volunteers
The Library provides a wide range of opportunities for seniors to connect with one another and meet new challenges as they continue to contribute to the vitality of the community. Seniors volunteer in a variety of capacities, from assisting with computer classes to mending library materials.

Brighton Memorial Library senior volunteers also serve seniors by delivering library materials to homebound residents age 60 and older through the Library’s Partners in Reading for Seniors program (PIRS). The Friends of Brighton Memorial Library includes many seniors who give back to the community by donating their time as volunteers.

The Friends operate a bookstore and manage book sales, and provide funding for many of the programs that are offered by the Library.

Accessibility
Brighton Memorial Library is fully accessible to those with mobility issues. Handicapped parking spaces are located in front of the Library near a designated crosswalk for additional safety.

The doors are automated and dual ramps lead into the Library. Bathrooms are handicapped accessible. A wheelchair lift provides easy access to the Friends Learning Center for programs and computer classes. A walker and a wheelchair are conveniently located just inside the front doors for patron use.

All tables, study carrels and computer stations are handicapped accessible.

At the Reference and Circulation Centers, individual sound amplifiers are provided upon request to enhance communication for those who are hearing impaired. Magnifying glasses are also available. A TDD line at the Reference Center facilitates text based telephone communication with deaf people of all ages.

The Alice Wilson Room, designed for visually impaired patrons, includes a computer that will scan and enlarge text and also read it aloud. Patrons can create documents using extra-large type fonts available through specialized word
processing software.

A unique hands-on learning area of the Library, the Brighton Kiwanis Discovery Room, is very popular with grandparents when they visit the Library with their grandchildren. The Children’s Center, collections and programs provide many opportunities for seniors to share special times with youngsters.
