Our Gardens are Growing!

To complement the expanded Library, the Carol Heininger Wahl Memorial Children’s Literary Garden and the Entry Garden have been made possible by generous contributions from donors.

The Carol Heininger Wahl Memorial Children's Literary Garden, just outside the Children’s Center, has meandering paths, perennial beds and shrubs to attract butterflies and birds, ornamental trees. A rich array of plantings provide a wonderful palette to brighten every season. A child-sized amphitheater is designed for warm-weather storytimes. Benches offer a resting place for young explorers and book lovers of all ages. Quotations drawn from children’s literature relate to the plantings and serve as way-finders to the garden “exploratorium”.

The Carol Heininger Wahl Memorial Children’s Literary Garden was honored by Brighton Neighbors United. A Brighton Neighbors United Beautification Award was presented on August 14, 2002 by Judy Schwartz, chairwoman of Brighton Neighbors United, which consists of members from the town's various neighborhood associations.  Each year the award is given to show appreciation to businesses and groups that beautify their properties and enhance the town of Brighton. Award recipients included Library Board President Rose-Marie B. Klipstein, Library Executive Director Angela Bonazinga, major donors Thomas Wahl, Jr. and Kate Wahl Sullivan, in whose mother's memory the garden is named, and Shubhangi Gandhi of Razak Associates LLC, who provided all garden design services.

The Entry Garden (link to more information), designed in the style of a contemplative Asian garden, enhances the view from the New Materials Reading Room. It welcomes visitors to the Library in their pursuit of lifelong learning and enrichment opportunities.

In addition to the gardens, landscaping surrounding the Library adds beauty and gives year-round pleasure.
