2008 LITERARY AWARDS CONTEST

The contest is open to all students in grades 6 through 12 who live in or attend school in Brighton.

Students will compete in the Junior Division,

grades 6 through 9, and the Senior Division, grades 10 through 12.

Each Division has separate prose and poetry categories.

One first prize of $50, one second prize of $25, and up to four honorable mentions ($10) will be awarded in both the poetry and prose categories in each division, provided the judges feel an award is justified. The criteria of judging are originality, clarity of prose, and good English usage. Subject matter is unrestricted.

Entry requirements are as follows:

• Must be an original work by the contestant. Students are encouraged to work with an English teacher or other consultant for help in form, grammar, spelling, etc.

• Prose may be in any form (short story, essay, play, etc.) and must be a minimum of 250 words. Please limit poetry and prose to 10 pages or less.

• Entries must be word processed or typed on standard 8.5” x 11” paper. The title and page numbers (if more than one page) must appear at the top of each page. For equity in judging, no data regarding name, school, etc. should appear on these pages.

• Contestants must provide four copies of each entry. Create a separate cover page indicating the title of the entry, contestant’s name and complete address, phone number, school and grade, and attach to top copy.  (This information is not made available during the judging.)

A maximum of two entries in each category will be accepted from each contestant. Only one award will be given in each of the prose and poetry categories to a single contestant.
