   KURZWEIL SCREEN READING SYSTEM
“I can see, I can read, I am independent!” was the reaction of John Speranza of Brighton (pictured above) after being trained by Karen Kase-McLaren, Reference and Network Services Manager, to use the Kurzweil 3000 reading system at Brighton Memorial Library. Easy to use for anyone who is visually impaired, or unfamiliar with computers, the Kurzweil 3000 is a tool that brings together a scanner, computer and speakers to “read” printed words out loud. Mr. Speranza, who has macular degeneration, said the Kurzweil is superior to any magnification or reading device he had previously used.

The Kurzweil will magnify words from legal documents, medical articles, newspapers or any other printed pages. For individuals who have learning disabilities like dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and other literacy difficulties, the Kurzweil has the capability to highlight and read aloud word passages, definitions and spellings. It also will read words in other languages and provide assistance to those who are learning the English language. Brighton Memorial Library was able to add this state-of-the-art reading system through a generous Adult Literacy Services grant from the New York State Education Department secured by the Monroe County Library System. Anyone interested in using the Kurzweil may stop at or call the Reference Center at 784-5300.

The Alice Wilson Room features the latest information technology to expand access for people who are challenged by visual impairments, learning disabilities and literacy difficulties. The Kurzweil is an easy to use screen computerized system equipped for low vision readers, equipped with audio and large print technology. The enhanced PC includes a scanner and Zoomtext, a fully integrated magnifier and screen reader. The Electronic Typewriter offers a professional touch keyboard and advanced typing capabilities, including text storage and correction memory. The Microform Reader/Printer provide easy browsing and printing of genealogy sources, like back issues of the Brighton Pittsford Post, the Democrat & Chronicle and local history records.
